Physical access and facilities

• Elevator upgrade works

  The Domain Theatre, Library and Members Lounge on lower level 3 are accessible via escalator only

  The elevator connecting the ground floor with lower level 3 in the Naala Nura building is temporarily out of service while essential upgrades are completed.

  Until October 2026, the Domain Theatre, Library and Members Lounge on lower level 3 will be accessible via escalator only and pram parking will be available on lower level 2.

• Parking and drop-offs

  On-street parking

  There are three dedicated accessible parking spaces with access from the curb in front of the Art Gallery.

  Two of these spaces are at the front of Naala Nura.

  One is in front of Naala Badu, and is available during Art Gallery opening hours.

  Note: From 10pm to 10am the accessible parking is classified as a Loading Zone.

  Two more spaces are located next to the Woolloomooloo Gate entrance to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, near the intersection of Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquaries Road.

  General metered and timed parking is available on Art Gallery Road, Mrs Macquaries Road, Hospital Road as well as Lincoln Crescent and nearby streets in Woolloomooloo. Holders of mobility parking permits do not pay for parking and may park for longer periods; more information is available on the NSW Government website.

  Off-street parking at the Art Gallery

  There are two dedicated accessible parking spaces onsite, at the rear of Naala Nura.

  To access these spaces, drive down the service road (signposted ‘Deliveries’) off Art Gallery Road on the south side of the building, to the boom gate.

  At the gate, press the intercom and our security staff will direct you to a parking space if one is available.

  Car park

  The Domain Car Park next to the Art Gallery is operated by Wilson Parking. The entrance to this car park is on St Marys Road.

  Changes to access: The lift closest to the Art Gallery is not operational as it is being replaced. The car park’s south lift remains operational but there is no sealed path across the park to the Art Gallery.

  Drop-offs

  There is a drop-off zone near the front of the Art Gallery. Vehicles are required to do a loop along Art Gallery Road and Mrs Macquarie Road before dropping off.

  In some cases, drop-offs may also be made to the accessible rear entrance of Naala Nura. See Entering and leaving the Art Gallery.

• The area around the Art Gallery

  There is improved universal access throughout the area around the Art Gallery.

  There is now a smooth gradient from the Domain to the pedestrian crossing in front of Naala Nura.

  There is a new accessible pathway through the Art Garden on the Art Gallery campus, connecting Lincoln Crescent in Woolloomooloo with the city via public stairs (open 24 hours) or two lifts (operating 6am to 11pm daily). There is also an accessible route to Art Gallery Road via a lift on Bourke Street to a pedestrian bridge. Additional public stairs to Art Gallery Road are on the north side of Naala Badu, next to the Ausgrid substation on Lincoln Crescent.

  Changes to access: The lifts between Lincoln Crescent and the Art Gallery may not be operational at times due to maintenance. If you have questions regarding access, we recommend contacting us on 02 9225 1700.

• Entering and leaving the Art Gallery

  Naala Nura

  The main entrance, on Art Gallery Road, can be reached via a set of nine stairs, or via a ramp on the left as you face the building. These doors are open during Art Gallery opening hours. Inside the vestibule, there is a set of two stairs or a ramp.

  There is alternative entrance/exit at the rear of the building. This is accessed via the service road (signposted ‘Deliveries’) off Art Gallery Road on the south side of the building. At the boom gate, press the intercom if you are in a car or make your way to the rear door.

  

  Naala Badu

  The main entrance, on Art Gallery Road, can be reached from the Welcome Plaza, which has a gentle gradient. There are no stairs. There are two sets of glass doors, with ample space in between them, to help control the environment within the building. These open and close automatically.

• Moving around the Art Gallery

  All public areas inside both buildings can be accessed by ramps and escalators, as well as stairs and elevators, with the exception below. The Entrance Pavilion in Naala Badu has a gentle gradient.

• Cloaking

  There are free cloaking facilities on the ground level of Naala Nura, near the welcome desk, and in the welcome hub between the two buildings, near the entrance to Naala Badu.

• Toilets and carers facilities

  Naala Nura

  Wheelchair-accessible toilets are located on lower levels 1, 2 and 3. All-gender toilets are located on lower level 2. There are baby change tables on all these levels as part of the toilet facilities. A parents and carers room is located on lower level 1, near the cafe.

  Naala Badu

  Wheelchair-accessible toilets and parents and carers rooms are located on lower levels 1, 2 and 4.

  Changing Places

  Accredited Changing Places facilities are located on lower level 2 of Naala Nura and lower level 4 of Naala Badu, for visitors with high support needs and their carers. Please ask any Art Gallery staff member or volunteer for assistance to access these facilities.

• Seating

  Seating is available throughout the Art Gallery. Portable stools can be borrowed without charge for use in the buildings – just ask at the welcome desk on the ground level of Naala Nura; at the welcome hub near the entrance of Naala Badu; or one of our friendly uniformed staff.

• Wheelchairs and mobility scooters available

  We have wheelchairs and mobility scooters available for use within the Art Gallery for free. You’ll be asked for some form of ID.

  For wheelchairs or mobility scooters:

  • in Naala Nura, ask at the welcome desk on the ground level or at the rear entrance

  • in Naala Badu, ask at the welcome hub near the entrance.

• Aids available for people with low vision

  Handheld magnifying lenses are available for use within the Art Gallery for free, from the welcome desk on the ground level of Naala Nura.

  Large-print or accessible labels are available for some exhibitions and displays, online via the exhibition pages on our website, or as a printed booklet from the welcome desk on the ground level of Naala Nura.

  

  

• Aids available for people with colour vision deficiency

  EnChroma glasses are available for use within the Art Gallery for free, from the welcome desk on the ground level of Naala Nura.

  These glasses are designed for people with colour vision deficiency (sometimes called colour blindness). The impact varies, depending on the individual, but colours generally appear brighter and more vibrant than they appear without glasses.

  

• Assisted listening systems

  In Naala Nura, an audio-induction loop is available in the Domain Theatre and Centenary Auditorium, and a hearing augmentation system is available in the Members Lounge and children’s art library.

  In Naala Badu, hearing loops are available in Meers Hall, the Learning Studio and the Media Lab.

  

• Companion cards

  General entry to the Art Gallery is free to all visitors. A carer or person who supports a visitor with disability or frailty is admitted free to paid exhibitions if they present their companion card at the welcome desk in Naala Nura, or the welcome hub near Naala Badu.

  

• Dogs

  We welcome guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs in the Art Gallery.

• Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program

  The Art Gallery supports growing awareness of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. Staff who have been trained to support visitors with hidden disabilities will wear a sunflower badge. Visitors are also encouraged to wear a sunflower lanyard, if they wish – available on arrival.
