About
The model can be attributed to Joseph Willems, a Flemish sculptor who was working for Sprimont at Chelsea from c1748 until his departure for Tournai in 1766. The figure is presumably one of the ‘Italian beggars’ mentioned in a Chelsea sale catalogue of 1756.
