The first event held by the New South Wales Academy of Art in the year it was established was a 'conversazione', held on 7 August 1871. This carte-de-visite was produced as a memento or souvenir of this event. The work of art illustrated on the front of the card was the statue of 'Highland Mary' by B E Spence. This statue was on display during the conversazione, on loan from Judge Josephson, who had purchased it directly from the sculptor. The work was eventually gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Judge Josephson. It was later deaccessioned by the Gallery and sold in 1958 to Lady Lloyd Jones. However, it was gifted again to the Gallery on request by Lady Lloyd Jones in 1982.
