About
'Seated figure' was made while Fairweather was living in northern Australia, during the second of three principal phases of drawing in his career when his work made major shifts in content and style. Chinese calligraphy encouraged Fairweather to experiment with different ways of making marks; although he did not use calligraphy in a strictly traditional sense, it influenced his art profoundly, particularly his drawing. For Fairweather, drawings were catalysts in the development of his painting, part of a continuing cycle of development and progress.
