  • About

Jude Rae is a highly regarded painter of still life subjects, interiors and portraits, rendered in a minimal, realist aesthetic. Rae has characterised her paintings of interiors - which include airport terminals, corridors and office blocks - as representing space. Her works are devoid of people and the focus is placed on the architecture and the interplay of light, colour and form.

The etchings Foyer I and Foyer II relate to the two paintings Interior 370 and Interior 371 that Rae made for an exhibition at the Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra in 2017. In this series, Rae depicted the foyer of the recently built ANZ tower that runs between Castlereagh and Pitt Street in central Sydney.

‘These etchings came about prior to the paintings and were an important step in the development of my understanding of the relationship between painting and printmaking in my work. They helped me work through aspects of composition that are critical when working at a large scale, particularly where there is a strong sense of pictorial space.’
