"This print is from the period of the Vietnam War. At the time, it was in the news all the time. There were public demonstrations.
I called it The hill because it is about a hill being taken – the reportage of Khe Sanh came to mind; and of the sacrifice of those stuck up on a crucifix without the cross – the suggestion of victims of suffering; guns facing down the hill and of lumps going up the hill. It's social comment – trying to make a figurative image without being too literal. This and the painting The threat are close to commenting upon what was happening, also being conscious of not wanting to be messianic about it. You can make a powerful image without being totally specific…"
