About
Lambert submitted this painting to the War Memorial mural competition for the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne. The competition brief for a work to be placed on an upper wall of the Library staircase, stipulated that the subject was 'to be commemorative of the Great War, and to be treated decoratively or allegorically'. Lambert's painting, which captured the burden of war borne by those who survived was awarded second place.
