Distant plains of gold

Within the green oval in the centre of this work float golden clouds above finely painted flowers and grasses, recalling plants the artist has seen growing on riverbanks in Pakistan. The way in which they are depicted was inspired by the plants in an early miniature painting of a king hunting a lion.

The outline of a scientific instrument from an old encyclopedia crosses from the green oval into the tea washed field. It appears to be a type of telescope made to bring distant objects into sharp focus. With its companion work 'Knotting the waves', it also suggests unacknowledged emotions and desires, of how difficult it can be to see what clearly in front of us.
