About
This gouache is the smallest painting from the 'Upwey' series (1965-66), and is also the least formal and most fluid in handling. Its more extensive palette and extreme abstraction may reflect Williams' knowledge of the American abstract expressionists. It also presages Williams' late work, in which he depicts the landscape from above, rather than from the more familiar perspective of the ground.
