David Noonan, et al.

Untitled 3 2008

When Picasso was 14 years old he did studies of a court dwarf and a jester after paintings by Diego Velazquez he had seen at the Prado Museum in Madrid. Theatrical figures persisted in his work, from the acrobats and harlequins of the Rose Period (1904–06) to his designs for the sets, costumes and curtains for several avant-garde ballets, including for the Ballets Russes. The Australian artist David Noonan also takes inspiration from cinema, theatrical productions and costumes. In Untitled 3, young men are dressed in unusual theatrical costumes. The collaged and layered effect of the linen and jute – a method that Picasso also used – creates a composition which could be a rehearsal from an amateur theatre production or a science-fiction film.
