Hear artist Ricky Maynard in conversation with journalist and presenter Rachael Hocking about his lifelong commitment to documentary photography and the 2021 NAIDOC theme ‘Heal Country!’

This year’s NAIDOC theme calls for greater protections for our lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage and recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived and cared for this country for more than 65,000 years. Maynard’s powerful images speak to this history and explore First Nations sovereignty, survival and enduring connection to Country.

In the Gallery’s collection are the full suite of Maynard’s photographs from his two series Portrait of a distant land (2005, printed 2008) and Returning to places that name us (2000). Currently they sit alongside works by five other First Nations artists as part of the exhibition Longing for home, an exhibition that explores the way a longing for Country can be characterised by yearning, distance, time and space.

In the Frame is a series of lively conversations with artists and thinkers that unpacks the connections between art and the ideas, issues and events that matter most to us today. It is proudly supported by the Art Gallery Society of NSW and Macquarie University.
