Jessica Nagy The fisherman's daughter

The fisherman’s daughter is a glimpse into the role of Dutch women in the 17th century, and a reference to my own family’s connection to fishing. In the past, women were perceived to be merely domestic figures. Through the intimate connection between sea creatures and a human subject, my body of work represents the reality of hardworking fishwives, or in this case, daughters. The sea creatures are on the head of the model, on her hands, and in her mouth to highlight that these women were not just passive objects: they were hardworking women who got dirty and killed fish, practices known but not recognised.
