Alex Hemmings Indigenous identity

Indigenous identity is more than a representation of history – it shows a way forward! My body of work provided me with opportunities to connect with members of my indigenous community and discuss our hopes and dreams. This involved talking to a wide range of people – from young children all the way through to elders. My artwork is my community’s voice for our future! Some media coverage and government policies ignore our diverse and complex communities. Understanding and acceptance of indigenous diversity is part of the way forward for my community.
