Nicholas Levy 3am/Exit signs

3am/Exit signs explores the overpowering, heightened state of emotion which emerges late at night. The work explores the stark contrasts created between artificial light and dark, urban environments; light which renders surfaces such as skin, pristine, like the pure emotion affected at this time. The stories and backgrounds of the characters, left to the viewer’s imagination, evoke emotions in the audience. The contrast of the rough, worthless cardboard and the detailed, ‘precious’ art reflects the dichotomy of beauty and pain in extreme emotions in the audience. Through these connections I hoped to induce a state of nostalgic melancholy.
