Non-geometric form (splotch) #4

Sol Lewitt is one of the most influential figures to emerge from the conceptual art movement of the 1960s. He first exhibited his wall drawings here at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1977 for the sixth Kaldor Public Art Project. Thanks to the generosity of John Kaldor, the Gallery holds one of the most significant collections of works by LeWitt in the world.
In the 1990s LeWitt became interested in the expansion of drawing in three dimensions, resulting in his non-geometric forms or ‘splotches’. Working in collaboration with fabricator Yoshitsugu Nakama, LeWitt’s two-dimensional drawings were processed by computer programs to create visual models. These were transposed into physical objects made from construction foam that were coated with layers of epoxy resin and fibreglass. Finally, the sculptures were painted by a machine programmed to follow detailed instructions regulating shape and colour distribution.
