About
Blue Mountains based artist Peter Cooley's work straddles the mediums of painting, ceramics and installation. His earthenware work Wentworth Falls, a pair can easily be seen within the context of painting pushing the landscape tradition into three dimensions. The pair also demonstrates he can produce variation on the forms.
Cooley has a particular interest in the paintings of Eugene von Guerard and comments: 'It was von Guerard who famously painted the Wentworth Falls and where he saw a reddish tinge in amongst the falls. The stone beneath the falls is the ceramic beneath the glaze.'
Highly popular with tourists, Wentworth Falls is one of the most beautiful areas in the Blue Mountains with spectacular bushwalks and views. The recent devastating bushfires have given added poignancy to this area. Cooley follows in a long tradition of artists who have been inspired to depict the site, offering his own unique interpretation.
