  • About

Allan Mitelman is one of the most significant abstractionists working in Australia today. His work explores the allusive and poetic qualities of painting and drawing in works of great sensitivity and restraint, reflecting a singular, obsessive, highly tactile and rarified sensibility.

In the 1970s he made a large number of small experimental drawings that were strongly influenced by American artist Cy Twombly, described by Elizabeth Cross as having "….the unsettling yet delightful quality of private maps – annotated by precise records that might be archaeological, architectural, plumbing plans or quasi-scientific – secret and incomplete." (Elizabeth Cross, 'Allan Mitelman works on paper 1967-2004', National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2004, pg.54)
