About
Art Centre documentation for this work states:
‘Areyonga Tigers play Hermannsburg Bulldogs. Ntaria, everyone there for football carnival. Family there for both teams… people from all over, everywhere! [on the far right] Baby walking with the Kimbies, mother pushing pram. Fat little girl following her, no shirt, just skirt.Areyonga Tigers team [in the stand, on the right]. Hermannsburg Bulldogs team [in the stand, centre foreground]. Teams from all over play whole weekend, Hermannsburg, Papunya, Yuendumu, Areyonga, Nyirripi, Pukatja (Ernabella), Santa Teresa, Laramba, Yuelamu. They all here. All their families there too. Everyone connected to everyone.’
Joanne Npanagardi Wheeler, 2023Joanne Wheeler is Western Aranda and is the great granddaughter of Albert Namatjira, who identifies with the West MacDonnell Ranges as her Country, whilst also retaining strong links to Anmatyerr and Luritja Country through her extended family. Her practice focuses on stories from Ntaria/Hermannsburg, Mpulugkinya/Palm Valley and the Finke River, that span time and personal history narratives.
