About
Cubism was created by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso around 1907–08, working first along parallel lines and later in close collaboration. The two artists overturned the conventions of illusionist representation, such as single-point perspective, to create startlingly original images.
In the winter of 1908–09, Picasso was painting his Cézannesque landscapes in northern France, while Braque was producing similar works at L’Estaque in the south. Historians of modern art regard these paintings as a watershed. Features of the cubist style came together for the first time: limited colour, a relatively even tonality, shaded facet-planes, linear scaffolding and intricately patterned brushwork that resembles Cézanne’s technique. Here, Braque turned a simple motif – a country house seen over a bushy slope – into a curious play of ambiguities.
