About
Concerned with power and its representation, ex de Medici brings a contemporary perspective to the vanitas tradition – that is, still life as an allegory for the brevity and transience of life. Her finely executed watercolours incorporate close observation of the natural world with military objects such as machine guns, helmets and surveillance technology. 'Root and branch' 2016 depicts a luger pistol sprouting with native lichens, the delicate beauty of the organic growth counterpointed against the unyielding metal of the gun. The composition takes its cue from natural history drawing, with the addition of a secondary, sprouting twig on the blank sheet to the right of the weapon, and the fastidious miniaturist painting style.
