  • About

'Huang Yongyu is a Professor at the Central Art Academy in Beijing, an eminent contemporary Chinese artist who visited Australia as a guest of the Australia-China Council in 1981 when the exhibition “Chinese Paintings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” was on tour.

Born in the Fenghuang district in Hunan Province, from the age of 16 he studied the technique of woodblock printing from Li Hua, and in fact he is primarily known for his work in prints, mainly woodcuts. During the war he fled to Hong Kong and although he returned to China, his work was banned during the Cultural Revolution. Subsequently, he was appointed to the staff of the Central Art Academy where he is now a professor and devoted his career to making prints and book illustrations.

Huang’s bright and breezy style follows traditional Chinese manner in composition, subject and brushwork, but there is some evidence of Western influences in some evidence of Western influences in the colours, shading and chiaroscuro effects.'
