Young Archie 2013

Ben Quilty to judge first Young Archie

15 April 2013

The Art Gallery of New South Wales has announced the 2013 Young Archie competition for children to coincide with the most popular and prestigious art prize in Australia, The Archibald Prize.

Children between the ages of 5 and 18 are invited to submit a portrait of – as is stated in the rules – a person who is special to you – someone who is known to you and plays a significant role in your life’.

There are four age categories: 5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years and 16-18 years.

The competition will be judged by artist and Gallery Trustee Ben Quilty, who also won the 2011 Archibald Prize, and Victoria Collings, the Gallery’s senior coordinator of education.

The competition is an opportunity to enable children to become part of the on-going discussion about the importance of portraiture and recognising human endeavours in our community, said Victoria Collings.

Five finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Gallery and on the Gallery website. One winner will be chosen in each category.

Apart from the honour of winning works being hung at the Gallery, each winner will receive a $100 ANZ Visa Debit card, an art pack from Faber Castell and a family pass to the upcoming Sydney moderns exhibition as well as an ANZ money box and Archibald 13 catalogue. Finalists will receive an ANZ money box and the Archibald 13 catalogue.

Winners announced to the media 16 May at 11am. Exhibition on display 10 May until 2 June.
