Australia’s most anticipated annual art event – the Archibald Prize – moves to July this year.

With exhibition dates running from 19 July to 28 September 2014, this year also marks the first year that entry forms are online only.

Entries for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2014 opened on 5 May and will be received at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from Monday 23 June until Friday 27 June 2014 from 8am to 4pm.

Entries for the Young Archie 2014 competition – open to budding artists between the ages of 5 and 18 – opened on 31 March and will be received at the Gallery until Monday 9 June 2014.

Announcement of Archibald, Wynne and Sulman finalists + winner of the Packing Room Prize

The names of artists selected as finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes will be announced on Thursday 10 July at 11am. At the same time, the 23rd Packing Room Prize will be announced. This highly coveted prize of $1000 cash and a $500 ANZ Visa debit card is awarded by the Gallery staff who work behind the scenes and receive, unpack and hang all the entries. First awarded in 1991, the Packing Room Prize is adjudicated by the Gallery’s storeman, Steve Peters, who continues to claim his right to 51% of the votes.

Announcement of Archibald, Wynne and Sulman winners

Australia’s most extraordinary art event, the Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious art awards. With the financial support of ANZ, the winner of the Archibald Prize receives $75,000, the Wynne Prize for landscape painting or figure sculpture receives $35,000, and the Sulman Prize for subject/genre painting and/or mural work receives $30,000.

The People’s Choice + winners of the Young Archie 2014

People’s Choice: Since 1988, members of the public have had the opportunity to vote for their favourite portrait in the Archibald Prize. The artist receives $2500 and a $1000 ANZ Visa debit card for winning the People’s Choice. Each year a voter for the Archibald painting that receives the most votes wins $2500, a $1000 ANZ Visa debit card and one night’s accommodation at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.

Young Archie 2014: Now in its second year, Young Archie has four age categories: 5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years and 16-18 years. Five finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Gallery and on the Gallery website. One winner from each category will be chosen and those winners each receive a prize pack including a $100 ANZ Visa Debit card and an art pack from Faber Castell.

Finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes together with the Young Archie will be on display 19 July to 28 September 2014.

The Archibald Prize has been held annually since 1921 and is awarded by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The prize was established under the bequest of Jules François Archibald, founding editor of The Bulletin magazine. The Archibald Prize is awarded to the best portrait, 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’. Finalists in the Archibald Prize are exhibited first at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and will then go on a regional tour until September 2015.
