Guido Bentivoglio was born into a noble Ferrarese family and studied law and philosophy at the Padua, where he was friendly with Galileo. He came to Rome at the culmination of a distinguished diplomatic career for the Holy See, when Pope Gregory XV created him cardinal in 1621. This print reproduces only the bust of the original full-length portrait by van Dyck, now in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
