Emerge from your iso chrysalides, anti-social butterflies

As restrictions on being in the presence of another human being are tentatively relaxed, are you feeling like a startled hermit crab reluctant to emerge from your shell? This Together In Art Pocket Exhibition has got you covered.

A Welcome from Home

We always appreciate the warm welcomes from the visitor experience team members who greet visitors as they enter our building – so here’s an especially unique and heart-warming welcome, filmed lo-fi and DIY from the team members’ homes.

This little 'together apart’ moment reminds us, yet again, that art museums are art + people. So this week, we’re focusing on re-connection, intimacy and new ways of relating – celebrating the people, perspectives and practices that open up art for everyone.

Making shadow projections with Marian Abboud

Explore the ephemeral art of shadow play with multi-disciplinary artist Marian Abboud and her team of nieces Zara, Amelia, Elliana and Marcella. Filming from Marian’s studio and Arab Theatre Studio on Gadigal and Darug Country, they show how to assemble objects from nature within a simple framework and make an interactive artwork that dances in the dark.

Ruby slippers and purple sneakers

For me, a playlist is a love letter set to music. This love letter, sent out into the world, is dedicated to incredible Australian indie/folk artists who, as the videos of their live performances attest, are clearly masters of their instruments.

Heather Shannon

Fall into the hauntingly beautiful sounds of ‘Midnight sun’, a piano composition by Heather Shannon inspired by the long nights of sunshine in Icelandic summer.

Performed under lights in a space that sits outside of time – the temporarily closed Art Gallery of New South Wales – this piece lives in concert with another artwork of evening: ‘Nocturne 3 (departing nocturne)’ by Kamrooz Aram.

Filmed on Gadigal Country

Let’s confess

We’ve been locked down for so long that normal social mores seem a distant memory. As restrictions lift, perhaps it’s time to confess to some of the behaviour we’ve engaged in behind closed doors.

Together In Art Slow TV

Switch on for a slow TV experience as senior conservator Simon Ives cleans Arthur Streeton’s The Gloucester Buckets, a brilliant work from 1894 that needs expert treatment before going on display in our upcoming Streeton exhibition.

We hope you enjoy this peek into the heart of the conservation process – no before-and-after; no big reveal, but a meditative glimpse into method, patience, and meticulous care.

George W Lambert, 'The smiling sister (Miss Helen Lawson)', 1915. Art Gallery of New South Wales, purchased 1930

This smile will no doubt resonate with anyone who knows a nurse – their extraordinary empathy is usually matched with a wickedly good sense of humour.

On International Nurses Day this week, we were struck by the expression in this portrait of Red Cross nurse Helen Lawson, and also by another detail: her hands. George Lambert's paintings of fashionable society ladies often featured their hands posed in elegant positions, the better to display an artfully-crumpled glove or piece of expensive jewellery. Here, though the pose is similar – the flowers cheerful, the uniform spotless and fresh – when our gaze falls on the sitter's hands, we're reminded of what those hands have done and whose lives they have held together with their strength, courage and skill. Thank you to the nurses, today and every day.
