I can’t think of a nicer theme… a celebrative, heraldic theme, than birds.
– Brett Whiteley, 1989

Whiteley was fascinated by the beauty and character of birds throughout his life. From childhood he would watch birds in flight and nest, observing their movements and character. As an artist he continually captured their personality, trying to understand and know these extraordinary creatures. In drawings, paintings and sculpture Whiteley wanted to express his joy, humour and love through birds.
