Eva Kubbos was born in Lithuania and studied art from 1945 to 1950 at the Hochschule fur Angewandte Kunst, the College of Applied Art, in Berlin. She migrated to Australia in 1952 with her sister. After initial work in various manual industries, she returned to her art studies in 1956 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and later at the Swinburne Technical Art College, focussing on print making. In 1960 she moved to Sydney. In the year this photograph was taken she joined the Contemporary Art Society of New South Wales, becoming an active member. During this time she was also working as a commercial artist with the John Sands company.
