The watercolour by Conrad Martens of Apsley Falls was the first Australian work of art to enter the Gallery's collection. It was commissioned in 1874 by the trustees of the NSW Academy of Art at a cost of £50, and in March 1875 was awarded a gold medal for watercolour at the NSW Academy of Art exhibition. This letter was written by Martens when he was first informed of the commission.
