Lily (Sandover) Kngwarreye is the adopted sister of renowned artist, Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Alyawarre artist, Lily Kngwarreye, was born c. 1937 and her country is Entibera. She began paintings with the other Utopia artists in 1988-89. Currently a member of the Utopia artists cooperative, Urapuntja Artists, Kngwarreye collaborated with Northern Editions in producing the etching 'Alhwert I' and 'Alhwert II' (also in the Gallery's collection).
The alhwert (pronounced 'allota') were a small burrowing bettong, now extinct. This print depicts iepa grass, which was the traditional food source and home of the alhwert. The centre from which the patterns radiate is where the alhwert made its home.
