  • About

The actor Bandō Jusaburo III (1886-1954) was born in Osaka and began his kabuki career when he was just five years old. He is shown in this image in the role of sumo wrestler Mizuhiki Seigorō in the kabuki play ‘Fight of Megumi (Megumi no kenka)’. First performed in the early 1880s, the play was based on an 1805 altercation in Edo (Tokyo) between sumo wrestlers and firefighters in which one man was killed. The artist Natori Shunsen (1886-1960) is well known for his expressive representations of the kabuki actors he admired during the 1920s and 30s.
