About
In the early 1740s Canaletto gave up painting almost entirely and devoted himself to drawing and etching. He probably made his first etching around 1735, and worked in the medium until 1745. Canaletto's prints depict actual Venetian views and imaginary landscapes ('capricci'), but sometimes they are a synthesis of the two traditions, as in the etching displayed here.
