  • About

Debra Phillips' series 'The Colonisation of Time' consists of eight large colour photographs mounted on aluminium in brass, steel, copper or lead frames. This use of the frame as an integral part of the work is a logical extension of her earlier 'Balance of Obsolescence' series in which Phillips used rusty cast-iron frames to encase images of humble or outmoded tools. In the later series, suffused with a sense of temporal change, the work draws attention to its own photographic technique and continues the artist's austere philosophy and consistent understatement. In the works from 'The Colonisation of Time' Phillips explores, within carefully staged and technically inspired images, the tension between the abstract and figurative.
