About
Horace Brodzky was born in Melbourne in 1885 but left Australia at the age of 20 with his family for the United States, marking the beginning of an international career focused largely on drawing, printmaking and design that would play out between New York and London until his death in 1969.
Brodzky secured a particular reputation for his prints while in New York between 1915–23, having developed a loose amalgam of fauvist and post-impressionist techniques in London the previous decade. This is evident in Untitled (cathedral door) 1912 where solid forms dissolve into effulgent light, and the gloomy form of the catherdral contrasts in gothic splendour with the notational, flat forms of the city beyond.
