About
'Tin Lizzie' is an emergetic complement to the the painting by Danica Lundy, 'Inspiration of the poet', also in the Gallery’s collection. Here, as in many of her paintings, Lundy uses the interior of a vehicle as a viewing device through which we see a turbulent and layered social reality. Renowned for paintings that draw on personal memories and working-class North American culture, Lundy has often used cars as images of mobility, dislocation, constraint and possibility. She writes: “Well, the car… anything can happen in a car. In a larger sense, it’s a North American coming-of-age symbol-and sort of tucked right into the trajectory of modern art. Cars feel private but are mostly see-through, they are personal by way of contents but not structure, still until they aren’t, off until they’re on, an equalizer, in a way – dynamic in their ability to hold any old thing or person, viewed outside looking in or inside looking out, and present a stage on which relationships can unfold.”1
