About
"There is something immensely exhilarating when tall white gums tower into the blue heavens - the subtle quality of the edges where they meet the sky - how mysterious ...".
Hans Heysen, c.1926Hans Heysen was one of the greatest Australian landscape painters, winning the Art Gallery of New South Wales' Wynne Prize for landscape nine times. Heysen's art was disciplined yet lyrical, based on a solidly European foundation, particularly the naturalism of the late nineteenth century French Barbizon school. Heysen's masterful compositions and strong draughtsmanship were informed by a close observation of the natural world and a reverence for those who lived and worked on the land. He found his subjects close at hand, especially near his home at Hahndorf and in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia.

This painting won the Wynne Prize in 1924 and was acquired by the Gallery in 1924
