Further information

This suite of prints was made by George Baldessin in his studio at Melbourne's Winfield Building, following his invitation to represent Australia alongside Imants Tillers at the XII São Paulo Bienal, Brazil. 'Occasional images from a city chamber' is one of the first Australian examples of a serial print, which was then a contemporary development in international printmaking. Few prints of such ambition and magnitude have been produced in Australia, confirming Baldessin's significance as a virtuoso etcher.

The physical appearance of this work, with its continuous line of images leading into one another like a frieze, surrounds and draws the viewer into a realm of mysterious forms and enigmatic figures. These elements, while stemming from Baldessin's studio surroundings, are manifestations of his imaginative world, and float randomly through its space to form a cohesive and harmonious whole.
