In 1963, when this portrait was drawn, O’Brien was living in Elizabeth Bay, and working as the Art Master at Cranbrook School, a position he held from 1946–67. He was an inspiration to a number of his students who later grew to become artists, including Martin Sharp and Brian Dunlop; many of his students also modelled for portraits, most likely including this drawing.
