Lloyd and Marjory Rees, accompanied by their son Alan and niece Gwynfa Rees, left Sydney by ship for Europe on Flotta Lauro's 'Sydney' on 16 December 1952. They spent ten weeks in Italy and France followed by four months in Britain and another three months in France, Spain and Italy before boarding the 'Orcades' in Naples on 2 November 1953, for their return to Australia.
Lloyd and Marjory Rees stayed at the Pensione Alboretti in 1953 and on all their subsequent visits to Venice. Alan Rees, their son, was responsible for finding it. It is well situated on the Rio Terrà Antonio Foscarini, adjacent to the Accademia Galleries. The street leads to the Grand Canal with a view of San Vitale on the opposite bank.
