About
Gerry Wedd’s art explores the traditions of the ceramic medium within a contemporary context. Taught to make pots by his mother in the family kitchen, Wedd now makes blue-and-white wares that reflect a life dedicated to the temperament of the natural world and a deep interest in the history of art and ceramics.
The presence of blue-and-white ceramics in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe reflects the histories of trade and travel between peoples and cultures dating back to the ninth century. Handmade in his Port Elliot studio, the 600-plus ceramics that form Where Are We Now? (Where are we now?) present a chronicle of Wedd’s interest in the history of this trade, along with references to nature, surfing, contemporary music, drug use, politics and social justice issues.
Wedd champions the role of ceramics as a tool for mass communication, and his tiled hearth is like a conversation between diverse threads of history unfolding in real time – the chatter of contemporary relics for our uncertain future.
