  • About

Arthur Boyd was introduced to collographs in 1989 by Indra Deigan's husband, printmaker Anthony Deigan, at Boyd's studio in Suffolk (UK). This resulted in Boyd producing a considerable number of collograph prints with Deigan and the artist and printer Max Miller. At the time, Boyd and Indra Deigan expressed an interest in a possible future collaboration, when she showed Boyd some hand-made books she had made while studying at the St Martin's School of Art, London. This project eventuated in 1993, when Boyd suggested they use a traditional Indonesian story as the subject of a book, to reflect Deigan's Indonesian heritage.

This image [Volcano] was made at Indra Deigan's studio, using industrial adhesive on two copper plates, as with the others in the book. The book was designed, printed and bound by Indra Deigan at the Graphic Investigation Workshop, Canberra School of Art, in an edition of ten. Boyd's prints and the text were printed on white BFK Rives paper, with Deigan's woodcuts on Japanese Kayazuki paper. In 1994, seven of Boyd's collographs from Sangkuriang (including 'Volcano') were released as individual prints, in an edition of 12.
