"...'(Mama/Papa)' ...is an Artaudian regression.... 'Blackleg' of course suggests 'scab' or 'pariah' or even another, more ironical way of thinking about 'stump' or amputated arm, as in 'blackstump'. 'Beyond the blackstump' in turn suggests 'beyond the pale'. The associations are vertiginous and are compounded by introducing photo-documentation of earlier performances as 'wounds' to be stapled onto the leg. This magnification and displacement of 'gaps' left by the photographic record (the impossibility of the 'real' as merely an image) is the recurrent theme of so much of my work of recent years and is enacted in variously conspicuous ways, across the range of all these photographic pieces".
