Opening celebrations FAQs

At the Art Gallery of New South Wales

  • Entry to the Art Gallery and all opening events is free.

    You DO need to book a timed and dated ticket to visit us on the opening weekend (3 and 4 December 2022) because capacity is limited.

    The time you choose is for entry into our new building, known as the North Building. There is NO timed requirement for entry into our original building, now known as the South Building.

    You do NOT need a ticket to visit us before 3 December or after 4 December.

    There are separate tickets for some events.

    You can book a free timed-entry ticket online for the exhibition in the Tank – Adrián Villar Rojas: The End of Imagination – if you’re visiting after 4 December. You can also book a ticket at the Art Gallery.

  • The Art Gallery offered the public a chance to be one of the first in line by signing up to receive an email with a special link to book a ticket. Those who signed up have been emailed.

    The remaining tickets are now available, on a first-come, first-served basis. Book your timed ticket now

  • Most events do NOT require booking.

    If you do need to book a ticket, the booking link will be on the event page.

    If you hold a ticket to any of the above events during the opening weekend, your ticket will enable you to enter the Art Gallery and you do not need a separate visit ticket.

    Tickets are also required for the free Art for all concert in the Domain, opposite the Art Gallery. See below.

  • The venues for the silent film and live music (Domain Theatre) and Art exchange talks (Meers Hall) have several spaces accessible for wheelchairs as well as seating for people with mobility requirements. Contact us if you wish to reserve these spaces:

  • Tickets booked online will be provided by email, which can be scanned from your mobile device or printed for entry.

  • As spaces are limited, please notify us if you can no longer attend. If you need to cancel your ticket, you can simply hit the cancel button on your confirmation email or call our box office on 02 9225 1627.  You may also forward your confirmation email to a friend if you can no longer attend.

  • If all online tickets are booked out, please check our website again closer to the event. Cancellations and returns are common for free events.

  • Events start at the times indicated. Please arrive at the event location 10 minutes before the start time so your ticket can be scanned; otherwise, your ticket may be released. Latecomers may not be admitted.

  • What do I need to know about tickets to the concert?

    Tickets are free but should be booked through Ticketmaster.

    The booking link is on the event page:

    Maximum of six tickets per person per booking.

    This is an unreserved standing event. No seating is available. Distance to the stage is on a first-come, first-served basis.

    If you just show up on the day and there are still tickets available, staff at the concert will try to assist entry; however, we strongly recommend that you book in advance.

    The concert will not be broadcast or streamed.

  • Is there an age limit?

    No, but people under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult and require a ticket.

  • When and where is the concert?

    When: Saturday 10 December 2022
    Gates open: 6pm
    Concert starts: 7pm
    Concert ends: 10pm

    Where: The Domain, Sydney
    Opposite the Art Gallery of New South Wales
    Between Art Gallery Road and Hospital Road
    Next to the Royal Botanic Gardens

    The best way to get to the Domain is by public transport. Please plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time.

  • What should I bring and what can't I bring or do?

    This is an open-air event in an outdoor parkland venue.

    Please consider the weather and wear or bring appropriate clothing and footwear. This may include a hat and sunscreen, or rain protection such as a raincoat or poncho. You won’t be permitted to use an umbrella.

    Food and drink (including alcohol) is available to buy onsite. No external food and drink will be allowed into the venue.

    Please don’t bring:

    • food or drink (other than baby food)

    • chairs, elevated seating, bean bags or inflatable furniture

    • picnic blankets and other plastic ground coverings

    • tents, marquees, and tent/camping pegs of any kind

    • beach umbrellas

    • eskies, BBQs and other picnic items

    • glass

    • sparklers or fireworks

    • narcotics (other than those prescribed by a registered medical practitioner)

    • pets

    The organisers reserve the right to inspect and search bags brought into or out of the venue. Smoking (including the use of electronic cigarettes or similar devices) is prohibited. Unauthorised soliciting, collections and customer surveying is not permitted. You must not enter any restricted or non-public areas, including back-of-house and performance areas.

  • What about the weather?

    This open-air event will go ahead even in doubtful or adverse weather, including rain.

    The event will only be cancelled if the weather poses a threat to the safety of performers or the audience. 

    If an event is cancelled due to adverse weather, you will be notified via the Art Gallery of New South Wales website and social media channels.

  • What do you do with lost property?

    There will be a tent to house lost property for the duration of the concert. After that, any items left behind can be collected from the Art Gallery of New South Wales for a period of two weeks then they will be handed over to the police or donated to a charity.

  • Is the event wheelchair accessible?

    The event is wheelchair accessible.

    The main entrance for ticketholders is located on Art Gallery Road, directly facing the Art Gallery of New South Wales' South Building.

    Pathways through the Domain parklands to the main entrance are accessible.

    Once inside the event, accessible facilities and amenities will be available.

    Limited accessible seating space will be available on the viewing platform, to which there is ramp access.  This will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Yes. The Art Gallery has extended hours during our opening celebrations from 3 to 11 December 2022, and this concert is part of a huge free program of art, music, performances and talks. See Opening celebrations
