Claudia Nicholson

Artist Claudia Nicholson pulls at the potency and slipperiness of memory in this suite of video collages created for Artists at Home. Accompanied by soundscapes by Lucreccia Quintanilla, each short vignette features footage and photographs from Claudia’s own personal archive, spliced together and superimposed into new, enigmatic compositions.

Scenes from Claudia’s home in Australia and her birthplace in Colombia, along with other locations in the Americas, are compiled into small studies that extend her ongoing investigation into the role of memory in the construction of diasporic identities. This sequence is bound together by the motif of water. Present in each collage, water serves as a resonant metaphor for the fluid nature of memory itself.

Three of Claudia’s video collages can be viewed below and the full suite of memory fragments will be posted on the Art Gallery’s Instagram stories between 2 and 14 October 2021 and aggregated in our Instagram highlights.
