Jezebel, Roxanna, Cartimandua, Gowhar Shad all wielded power as patrons, warriors, rulers, wives, mothers. Their lives were uncovered by remarkable 20th-century women including Gertrude Bell, Kathleen Kenyon, Freya Stark and Peggy Piggott, even as their stories served as morality tales for modern men.

Archaeologist Iain Shearer will explore these relationships in this richly illustrated lecture and continue the journey from his previous lectures on Queens of antiquity. Shearer will also draw reference to objects featured in the National Museum of Canberra’s exhibition Feared and Revered: Feminine power through the ages.
