Sydney Modern Project Update: April 2021

Construction update

Key elements of the new building have continued to progress over recent months.

Richard Crookes Constructions has completed the structural slab for lower level 2, with the first roof slab recently poured. Elsewhere, perimeter walls between lower level 1 and lower level 2 are being erected, and the substructure over the existing landbridge is nearing completion. Forming of walls to the lower level 1 mezzanine is progressing on the landbridge.

Erection of structural steel has commenced on the lower level 2 slab and will continue to other completed zones as they become available. Stripping of formwork, construction of masonry walls, and early installation of services has commenced on lower level 4.

Graphics have been installed along the site hoarding, adjacent to the northern stairs next to the Ausgrid zone substation and along Mrs Macquaries Road.

Upcoming works

Construction over the next three months will continue to focus on the building’s structural elements. Concrete slabs and walls will be formed and poured. Installation of services and masonry walls will progress on lower level 3 and lower level 4. Delivery and erection of structural steel will continue.

Construction of the contoured rammed earth wall located on lower level 2 is scheduled to commence in April 2021. The coming months will also see the first facade elements installed to the completed structures on lower level 2.

Deliveries via both Art Gallery Road and Lincoln Crescent site gates will continue to support the works underway on site.

Pedestrian access

The public stairs located at the northern end of Lincoln Crescent, Woolloomooloo between the Ausgrid zone substation and the project site have re-opened. The stairs are now compliant with the Building Code of Australia and Disability Discrimination Act.

Pedestrian access during this time is shown on the below map. Impacted areas will be signposted to advise of alternate and updated routes. Please note the accessible route to/from Woolloomooloo via the lift (or stairs) on Bourke Street near Wilson Street is unaffected by construction and remains open.

The NSW Government is undertaking an expansion of the Art Gallery of NSW, known as the Sydney Modern Project. The $344 million project will almost double current exhibition space and is the largest government and philanthropic venture of its kind to be achieved to date in the arts in Australia. The NSW Government has proudly contributed $244 million together with $100 million raised by the Art Gallery of NSW from private donors. The project includes a new stand-alone building, located to the north of the existing Gallery, a public art garden, and the adaptive reuse of a decommissioned WWII oil tank. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2022 and the Gallery remains open during this time.
