Drawn from the world-renowned State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, which holds one of the finest repositories of early 20th-century European painting, Masters of modern art presents artworks from this highly innovative and vibrant period in the history of western art.

Major French painters, Cézanne, Matisse, Pissarro and Monet, and their equally celebrated Russian contemporaries, Malevich and Kandinsky, are included here.

The majority of these works were collected in the late 1800s by two visionary Russian collectors, Sergey Shchukin and Ivan Morozov. These Moscow-based merchants began acquiring modern French art in the late 1800s in Paris and went on to assemble two of the finest collections of their kind.
