This feature length animation offers a much-needed pause for our face paced world. It is a simple tale of man marooned on an island and it is in its visual minimalism that is the film truly shines. Absent of dialogue the film brings into focus universal moments of loneliness, love and loss for which words often fail. Don’t be misguided thinking this is a children’s film. Much of The Red Turtle’s subtlety will be lost on children but will enchant those wanting to recapture childlike wonder.
The Red Turtle marks the first co-production from Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle). Co-written and directed by Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit the film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
In a majestic world of intricate hand-drawn textures, a shipwrecked man is found marooned on a desert island. With his attempted escapes thwarted by the strange and larger-than-life titular red reptile, the man's existence is forever altered when something extraordinary occurs. Academy Award-winning Dutch animator, Michal Dudok de Wit, makes his feature-length directorial debut with a beautiful film that marks the first ever international co-production with the famed Studio Ghibli.
