Philip Wolfhagen Little hinterland no 1
oil and beeswax on linen
57 x 46 cm
This painting is based on a landscape very close to home. I often walk up the hill behind our house where I can gain some elevation and enjoy the view across the valley. There is some remnant native vegetation here which I have used to frame the view. I have employed the graphic qualities of the half-dead shrubs and trees to develop a tracery through which one can still discern the distant horizon.
My admiration for the paintings of Claude Lorrain and John Constable is evident in my choice of a ‘portrait’ format to heighten the drama of the sky and the trees.
