Brodie Cullen A gronk’s grace
acrylic on found mattress
98.5 x 77.8 cm
In my art practice, I elevate what is typically overlooked through the salvage of discarded objects. The process for A gronk’s grace consisted of cutting out a section of mattress to then stretch and paint on, to interfere with traditional frameworks of painting. I am interested in everyday objects which mimic the human form – for example, a cup handle shaped to fit a hand – and the mattress is one such object. Further to this idea, household items left on the street for council clean-up appear, to me, as a graveyard. This work explores the viewer’s preconceived ideas attached to a mattress in the home environment.
