Girl at water's edge
oil on linen
152.5 x 121.5 cm
Further information

A girl stands at the water’s edge, looking into the distance above the viewer’s gaze.

This painting was brought into being quite loosely and also relatively quickly in order to limit critical thinking and preserve a kind of fragility; also, to rely on instinctual habits and ability accumulated through repetition, familiarity with scale, form and opulence of colour. With my usual uncertainty, combined with a vague direction, I painted her face. For me the face directs the work. I look to it as a guide for the projection of everything else, both stylistically and formally.

This painting is from a series of works, painted earlier this year, all featuring a solitary female figure immersed within a natural environment.
